Fairview, 2006-2012 — Graphic Designer
While working with Fairview, I redesigned their website and launched an email marketing program, Friends of Fairview, using Constant Contact. Every month, recipients received an enewsletter consisting of gardening-related articles. I was responsible for organizing the editorial calendar year, articles and deadlines of the newsletter, editing all articles, writing some articles, taking all of the pictures, designing the newsletter and putting everything together into a functional enewsletter that many enjoyed. In addition to their website and email marketing campaign, I created all of their advertising and marketing collateral.
Bird Watcher’s Digest, 1998-2005 — Production Director & Graphic Designer
During my time at BWD, I climbed the ranks. I started as Production Assistant, became their Webmaster, and in Sept. ‘02 became their Production Director. While Production Director, I oversaw the entire production process, from road map to press check of Bird Watcher’s Digest, Backyard Bird Newsletter, the Backyard Booklet Series, Wild Birds Unlimited’s newsletter BirdTracks, and all other print jobs for BWD. While maintaining synergy with other departments (advertising, circulation and editorial) so that all aspects of the magazine were addressed and accurate, I was also responsible for the layout/design in whole or in part of all publications and print jobs (examples: the magazine and newsletters, booklet series, tip-ons, inserts, PIPs, buckslips, holiday series, direct mail, trade show booth panels, etc.). I also had the opportunity to assist in the production of a field guide series published by Cool Springs Press, an identification guide published by Houghton Mifflin and The Original Birdhouse Book, published by BWD Press. In addition, I put together request-for-quotes and gathered bids from various printers and paper suppliers to determine the best solution for the project-at-hand. Aside from the production and creative sides of this position, I was also in charge of developing and maintaining the production budget for each fiscal year and for creating the production/editorial calendar that incorporated deadlines for all shipping/fulfillment companies, printers, paper suppliers, columnists, artists, etc. so the magazine was printed and on the newsstand by the deadlines provided by the newsstand fulfillment companies.
